  1. Dealing with Haters

You’ve heard of “social media marketing” right?

It’s quite possible you’ve heard of “content marketing” as well.

Have you?

Perhaps not and maybe you’re not quite clear on either or both those terms.

So…

  • What are they?
  • What is the difference?
  • Why do each matter?
  • Why we focus heavily on content marketing?

Content Marketing vs Social Media Marketing

Content Marketing vs Social Media Marketing - Intro to Content Marketing | Courageously Free

It’s so easy to get either of these confused with each other.

In fact, I’d say that “content marketing” is the newer kid on the block on most people’s minds, though it’s actually be around for hundreds of years.

Though, there is a bit of an overlap with the two, they also are pretty distinct ways of marketing as well.

Is one better than the other?

I would say that in a way saying that one is better than the other is comparing apples to oranges.

Let’s get a bit more into it, ya?

What is Social Media Marketing?

Ah, trusty old social media.

Social media marketing can be the bane of your existence, or it can be the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to promoting your business.

Maybe a bit of both.

But, what is it exactly?

When you’re dealing with social media marketing you’re really working directly on social media platforms to:

  • Quickly promote your business
  • Communicate and build your community
  • Create a culture around your brand on platforms your audience use

Social media marketing is simply, reaching out to your audience on a specific channel.

Whether it’s Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest…. or whatever, it’s creating value (or not) in that space.

What is Content Marketing?

When you’re dealing with content marketing, you’re focusing on the content itself within the context of your brand.

Your brand and your business are at the forefront, with the intention of providing value to your customer for a long term relationship.

Basically, your website is your home. It’s where you want to drive your customers to.

You may or may not be selling something specific, but your customer knows they can go to your website and find the information they need and not necessarily be sold.

By having a central area of information related to your niche and your brand, you can represent your brand with consistency without the limitations, filtering or discretion as you would on a social media channel.

Don’t get me wrong, you probably don’t want to offend people intentionally, but you still have the ability to speak freely without the confines you would otherwise on social media channels.

Why do they matter?

Yes, the two are pretty distinct.

Yet, there is a bit of overlap.

Why do they matter?

And… can you have one without the other?

I mean.. well you could, but it wouldn’t make sense to because you can leverage the both of best worlds to create great results for your business.

How?

Well, say you have a ton of information on your website.

In fact, you have a blog. You’re creating dynamic and up to date content. Content that your customer would totally thrive on because you’re basically giving them a solution to what they’re looking for.

If you’re not utilizing social media to promote this content even though you know your audience uses Pinterest (for example), how will you get to them otherwise?

You can think of your content as your fruit and vegetables and your social media as the produce truck.

If you can put your fruits and vegetables in the fruit and vegetable truck you can sell your fruit and vegetables at the farmer’s market right?

They matter if you’re running a business and you want your product or service in front of people’s eyeballs.

They matter if you want to build a following with the intention of providing value and having sales in exchange for it.

It really is your livelihood and if you treat it right you’ll get rewarded tenfold.

Why we focus heavily on content marketing?

Over the past few years we’ve had a strong social media presence. We’ve done free and paid advertising using different platforms.

We’ve also had content rich blogs in different niches and paired them up with social media.

So, why now are we focusing heavily on content marketing?

We’ve always known content marketing was crucial, but there was a huge chunk of time where we got rid of our main blog and solely used social media to promote our products and affiliate products.

We totally failed.

Well, not totally. We were still able to generate revenue, but we didn’t get as far as we wanted and for some reason we really couldn’t figure out why until we went back to the basics… back to where we started….

… with a twist.

When we realized it we because we weren’t focusing on starting with content and dispersing that to social media we had to change that.

We had to go back to the basics because we knew we were doing well when we did what we used to do, but we also wanted to do better.

And that’s whey we’ve re-emerged out into public with a new solid model around content marketing to share with other people like you.

Because we know it works.

Why You?

You’re here because of either of the reasons here…

  1. You have a business (or a business idea) and you want to gain traction online so that you can potentially automate a few processes and generate some revenue. Whether you just want to run a blog or you want to get a bit deeper and create online courses.. you still want to be able to figure out and use the best vehicles that suit you and your business model by reaching out to your potential customers/clients and attracting them to your products or services.
  2. You don’t have a business idea yet, but you want help figuring it out and … well… read number 1.  ↑↑↑

Now, here is the stipulation for your success…

I know you’ll save time and money over time.

But.. here’s the stipulation for your success.. you’ll still have to spend time, effort and money to build whatever you need to get the word out there.

Yes we can work on making everything time and money efficient, but you’ll need both of those.

There’s no other option.

You will get the guidance and suggestions, but you are developing you and your business. You need to do the work or hire someone to do it for you. But, you’ll still have to know the how-tos before you hire someone so you can teach them.

Why Me?

Well… why us.

We’ve been in this online game for better and for worse.

We’ve had our ups and downs and all arounds and with all that we’ve learned I’ve developed a simple model to build your digital marketing around.

Because… well… it’s simple.

Ever since we have been working in affiliate/internet/digital marketing we’ve learned a ton and wanted to share what works and what doesn’t work.

Maybe for you some of the things that worked for us won’t work for you, or some of the things that didn’t work for us will work for you.

But the only way to find out is to learn, implement, study the results and adjust right?

We’re just sharing our experience and really what I wanted to share with you is techniques on how to figure out what’s really best for you.

We’re sharing our brains and experience with you through teaching, tips, tools and tutorials.

Why A Strategy?

Why not a strategy?

Not having a strategy is like getting in a car and driving from Los Angeles to New York City without a map.

WTF!?

It’s a mess, and a waste of time and money.

I know… we’ve done it before.

I mean.. I haven’t driven from LA to NYC without a map, but we’ve forged ahead in our business without a strategic content marketing plan.

It’s probably the dumbest thing we’ve ever done, but to be frank… we never knew we had to.

Once we put one in place, everything made sense.

It was easy to put content ideas together.

It was easy to understand my messaging on all platforms.

It was easy to share the model I developed to others so that they could use it for their business too.

Why Did I Develop A Model?

When I started working in the online space I learned a ton from my mentors.

I learned how to build a brand, how to blog, how to leverage social media to gain traction, tracking and analysis… and much much more.

But, there was still something missing.

I learned enough information for my head to explode ten times over.

I implemented and got results from what I learned.

But… something was still missing.

I knew the brand we developed was something I stood behind..wait… but there was still something missing.

For some reason I was still confused.

I felt like I had no direction. I couldn’t understand how I knew so much information and grew my skills, but still had no direction.

When did it hit me?

When we moved back to New Zealand I knew I wanted to figure out a way to help local business owners.

We had a few new clients… and I was still confused and frustrated.

We’d teach them a few things, almost starting in the middle of nowhere.. almost getting.. nowhere.

Then.. IT HIT ME!

I needed to put something together that would not only really help the people we work with, but I also had to put something together that came from an authentic space.

I needed a duplicatable model that I’ve actually gone through myself.

How Did I Develop This Model?

Honestly?

Well, some of you know that May 2017 I had a baby.

During all that time breast feeding (ok, i know.. TMI.. but bear with me here)…

I had a lot of time to think.

ALOT!!

I also worked really close with my mentor and friend Di Downie.

I can’t even pretend to know everything she’s learned and experienced over the years.

But, what I do know is that she spent over 20 years learning natures principles from people like Buckminster Fuller.

She in turn took these principles and simplified them and applied them to every area of her life… INCLUDING BUSINESS.

Strange? Not Really.

New to most? Definitely.

I had already been in contact with her for a couple years until I realized what she was doing.

I am still learning these principles from her, but of the ones I do understand, I applied them to myself, my business and this content marketing model I developed.

She talks about these principles in her book (this is an affiliate link by the way).

In any case, what really solidified…well everything is her “Know You Why” program that taught me how to understand my values and my needs.

And from there.. I applied what I learned to multiple areas of my life.

It’s crazy actually.

I know I added a bunch of her links here, but I promised myself that after this new re-emergence of Courageously Free I would only promote things I truly believed in.

And… I only believe in Di and what I learned from her because I’ve seen it work for her and it sure as hell worked for me (not only because she’s a friend).

In any case, this model was developed and simplified with the three words “Collect. Curate. Connect” as the driving force.

COLLECT. CURATE. CONNECT.

Working with people and just teaching them “HOW TO” do anything towards promoting their business wasn’t cutting it.

It wasn’t enough.

All these technical tasks and how-tos are learnable.

They’re a heck of a lot easier to learn when you know exactly why you’re doing what you’re doing.

Creating the intention of taking a step back and digging deep as to why you are wanting to get word of your business out there is so crucial.

It’s important to come from the space of creating purposeful content to provide value to your audience. But, also knowing the exact people in your audience first.

The basis of this COLLECT. CURATE. CONNECT is:

  • to COLLECT details and information based on your content goals, mission and why.
  • to then allow you to CURATE ideas into tangible data through media
  • so that you can CONNECT to your audience by giving them what they’re looking for

This is what the strategic content marketing model revolves around.

It’s that simple.

How To Start – Why Set Intentions?

You’ll have access to a number of articles around things you can think about and implement to create a content marketing strategy.

You will also have access to a number of webinars and training about this exact model.

Why set intentions?

Setting an intention allows you to head towards a direction and stay focused.

Goals and intentions are great to give you direction, but remember too that there are times when these can and will change.

And that’s ok.

Just think of yourself as an airplane. When you fly somewhere you’re never going straight.. you have a direction and readjust constantly until you get to your destination.

Enjoy it.. let it flow.
