 original
əˈrɪdʒɪn(ə)l,ɒˈrɪdʒɪn(ə)l/
adjective  – created personally by a particular artist, writer, musician, etc.; not a copy.

authentic
ɔːˈθɛntɪk/
adjective – of undisputed origin and not a copy; genuine.

“Authenticity” … it’s such a buzz word these days, yet, it’s probably one of the… if not THE most powerful tool.

It’s not only the most powerful tool in your marketing, but really… your business.

But, what does being original and authentic actually mean?

The most obvious and easy answer is… well.. it’s just being you.

Um ok.

Ok that’s a wrap!

Hah.. no seriously.

We have to be real honest with ourselves. With so much influence around us all of our lives we’ve kind of moved away from who we really are.

I mean.. have you ever had a moment where you looked in the mirror and found one thing you didn’t like.. especially after coming across that one Instagram account where you saw an “after pregnancy photo” of a new mother who you thought looked more amazing than you do now?

Maybe, maybe not, but.. you get the idea right?

I’m going to give you the hard word right now.

You are actually perfect how you are. You are what makes YOU original and authentic.

Embrace it.

Don’t believe me?

Ok then, let’s give you 3 ways to create originality and authenticity in your content marketing.

1.) Write And Talk To Your Audience As If You Know Them.

Talk to them as if they’re your friend. Talk to me like you know me.

Use words like “you” and “I”.

You may or may not have noticed, but my languaging tends to be pretty chill.

It also tends to be pretty conversational. It opens things up and gives you permission to write in the comments, set up a free 15 minute coaching session or interact with me in another way that makes you feel comfortable.

I do have to admit, my vocabulary may not be the most extensive, but there’s nothing wrong with personalizing content even if you have mastered the English language… or whatever language you speak.

Think about it though…

wouldn’t you have more fun reading and hearing this rather than trying to understand words you don’t normally use in your everyday conversations?

2.) Be Okay with Not Being Perfect. Be Okay with Making Mistakes

Wait.. did I just contradict myself from earlier?

I said before that you’re perfect the way you are.. and now I say it’s ok to not be perfect?

Hmmm..

What I really mean is, be ok that you’re not what your perception of perfect is… partly because you’re already perfect in your own way and partly because.. seemingly making mistakes is totally normal.

And.. not being perfect or making mistakes makes you that much more real and relatable to the person you’re talking to.

Which leads me too…#3.

3.) Focus On Creating A Relationship

Being relatable will take you to that step closer to creating a customer.

Don’t think of your business in terms of money or customers. I mean.. do think of it because you’ll need that to figure out where you are and where you’re headed.

But, creating a relationship with your audience will help you to where you want to be.

And even if you write or talk to your avatar (that is that one person in your target market) like he or she is your friend… you don’t have to take them out to dinner.

Creating and having a relationship just means that you provide enough value and help solve problems in order for your avatar to get to know, like and trust you.

Now.. if you’re still struggling to create originality and authenticity, then it may be time to dig a bit deeper.

The basis of all of this.. everything in life.. in business.. in content marketing..

.. is to know your WHY.

I’ve linked you to my friend Di Downie’s blog because what she’s taught me has created a foundation in nearly everything I’m doing moving forward.

No joke.

If you’ve read the Intro to Content Marketing, you know I mentioned her and her teachings.

You’ll read/hear me talk about her again. You’ve heard her in my podcasts.

There’s a reason why.

She’s studied nature’s laws and patterns and has created 8 successful businesses from what she knows.

Like I said earlier, we’ve re-emerged into the online space with the intention of sharing what we’ve experienced and what works, but only you would really know what works for you by learning and trying something.

In any case, have a read and dig deep to figure out your why and then let’s get into it in the next section.
